Indu Huike - sarpanch Pavnar Panchayat

Indu Huike is the first woman sarpanch  of Pavnar Panchayat; a village in the Wardha district of Maharashtra. As the leader of the VHNCC or Village Health and Nutrition Co-ordination Committee; she  ensures  that nutritious care and advice is provided to children in need of it. And there are many such children – malnutritioned children and underweight babies are the norm here rather than the exception.

hello! come get your laddoos!

As a solution, Indu Huike turns to an old Indian recipe – laddoos made of jaggery and groundnuts – these delicious laddoos are made and delivered by the sarpanch and her assistant. All anemic and underweight children in her village get homemade laddoos that she personally delivers once a week – 7 per child; one for each day of the week.

She says that after a few weeks of these children eating the laddoos she can see a definite improvement in the child’s health and weight.

happy mother and child! the laddoos are yum! I ate one in the interest of research!

This is such a great personal effort towards humanity. I appreciate bringing this to light.

A few years back my husband was posted in Jharkhand n i was asked about cheaper nutritional supplements for the poor tribals , i taught them to make peanut milk at their home so that they can get milk for their new borns n toddlers. Also i taught them to make a ragi, peanut, sesame n flax panjiri with jaggery for the new mothers n other adults. This is such a fulfilling experience.

I still try n teach the maids about health benefits of cheaper grains like peanuts, sesame n flax . Most of the poor people like to learn , try n practice such things but some of them scorn over it too……..i never believe in providing them freebies though…….these laddoos i do not keep in the freebies category as they are meant for the children only n are rationed….Indu is a hero in true sense n i can guess that her approach is holistic.

    Kudos for such a post.
